hIBA BABA - DIRECTOR OF LITERACY ADVOCACY

The night of my eleventh birthday, I recall the once narrow streets broadening as parades of militants began to crowd all of downtown, leaving behind nothing but bullet shells and remnants of tear gas. It was that night that Kashmir’s most well-known activist was killed across the street from where I was standing. In mere minutes, my family's car was attacked by stone pelters in Indian-occupied Kashmir. My family and I escaped the region when I was eleven — others were not as fortunate. Schools in Kashmir remained closed due to the ongoing political conflict and blackout, halting the futures of children across the valley. Having witnessed the stark realities of violence in Kashmir, I am driven to help improve the future and education of young girls in countries facing similar crises. With the help of "Her Kitaab", I aim to provide young girls with the tools, support, and opportunities they need to break free from the cycle of conflict and build a future filled with hope and promise.
